Harvest Season Brings More Than Farm Equipment to North Dakota Roads

With harvest underway across North Dakota, motorists can expect to share the road with more combines, tractors and other large farm equipment. Vision Zero reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert and use patience when approaching or traveling near agricultural vehicles.

Farm equipment often travels much slower than other vehicles, so drivers can come upon it faster than they expect and may have little time to slow down. Equipment may also be wider than a traffic lane, have limited visibility and require additional space to turn or maneuver.

"Farm equipment is a familiar sight on North Dakota roads during harvest season, but drivers still need to adjust when they encounter it," said Karin Mongeon, director of the North Dakota Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division. "A little patience and extra attention behind the wheel can help everyone get where they're going safely."

Data from 2025 shows there were 35 crashes involving farm equipment in North Dakota.

In addition to always wearing a seat belt, drivers sharing the road with farm equipment should:

• Slow down early and keep a safe following distance.
• Pass only when it is legal and safe, with a clear view of oncoming traffic.
• Watch for equipment making wide turns or turning into fields and approaches.
• Never assume an equipment operator can see your vehicle.
• Watch for mud and debris near field entrances.

Farm equipment operators should:

• Use lights, flashers, reflectors and slow-moving vehicle emblems to increase visibility.
• Be aware of traffic approaching from behind, especially before turning.
• Make sure loads and equipment are balanced and secure.
• Use an escort vehicle when appropriate, especially when moving oversized equipment or traveling in low-light conditions.
